Podcast: Reflecting on the September jobs report and "acceptance loyalty"

In this episode of The Charles Aris Podcast, CEO Chad Oakley discusses the latest Jobs Report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and reflects on a disturbing trend affecting the workforce: a lack of what we’re calling “acceptance loyalty.”

Jobs Report:

The September Jobs Report stated that new non-farm payroll jobs in the United States equaled 187,000, which is the same amount reported during the prior month for July. This anomaly was short lived as the Fed revised September’s numbers to 157,000. The unemployment rate jumped up from 3.5% in July to 3.8% in August, but this likely points to a growth in the available labor force and not a decrease in available jobs. Overall, there’s still enough evidence to point towards an anticipated soft landing for the economy.

Acceptance Loyalty:

In the last month, two separate clients told Charles Aris they extended offers to CFOs only to have them renege on the offer days before their anticipated start date. To avoid this scenario, we recommend hiring authorities do four things:

  1. Continue having live conversations with accepted candidate before start date
  2. Have multiple people from your team call the candidate to check in
  3. Tell the candidate about their onboarding plan
  4. Send the candidate semi-confidential company information
